Real Madrid have presented the list of players who will be in the match squad for the match day against Girona. The list was announced only on Saturday morning, although the club usually publishes it much earlier – about two hours after the coach’s press conference. This time, Xabi Alonso deliberately delayed his decision, waiting for information about Raul Asensio’s health.
Asensio did not train with the team and was not included in the squad
The Spanish defender missed Friday’s training, and club television said he was battling a gastrointestinal infection. Although it was initially thought that the chances of his appearance were minimal, the Real coach refrained from announcing his call-up until the day of the match. In the end, however, Asensio was not included in the list and will not be available for the match against Girona.
Good news for Real: the two centre-backs are back in action
Despite Asensio’s absence, the defensive situation looks much better than it did a few days ago. Eder Milito and Antonio Rudiger are back to full fitness, which is a huge boost for Royals. This is particularly important after recent personnel problems in the center of defence, where Alonso has had to use emergency players.
Real’s squad is getting stronger in other formations as well
Not only did the defensive line get new players. Thibaut Courtois is back at the coach’s disposal, has dealt with a viral infection and is now able to get back between the posts. Franco Mastantuono was also in the squad and Ferland Mendy had previously recovered.
Dani Carvajal, Dean Huissen and David Alaba are still unavailable, so Real still have to deal with some personnel shortages, although the situation is looking more stable every day.
The matches against Girona are important in the battle for positions
The clash with Girona, scheduled for 9:00 p.m., is very important in the context of the league competition. Both teams are at the top of the table, so any weakness during the match could play a big role. The return of Milito and Rudiger has significantly boosted the confidence of Real’s defence, which had been badly hit by injuries in previous weeks.
